Communities
The Skeena Watershed is home to between 50,000 and 60,000 people, most of whom live in the regional centers of Prince Rupert, Terrace, Hazelton, Smithers and Houston. It is also home to several First Nations including Tsimshian, Gitanyow, Gitxsan, Wet’ sewet’en and Carrier/Sekani. These nations are centered in the communities of Lax Kw’alaams, Metlakatla, Kitkatla, Kitsumkalum, Kitselas, Kitwanga, Gitanmaax/ Old Hazelton, Kispiox, Hagwilget, Moricetown and Fort Babine. The importance of the salmon resource throughout the watershed creates common ties and continues to unite the communities to ensure this resource remains the cornerstone of our culture and economy into the future.
